Going to elementary school made me think

We had Parent Teacher Conference tonight, and of course Lora rocks. she's ahead in everything even while claiming "I hate math". Her teacher thinks it's funny that she says that she hates it when she's so good at it. I wonder if it isn't somehow "Cool" to hate math. I hated math for real. We moved so much that I was always behind in it so by the time I got to Junior High I was placed on the math-dumb track and with continued moves I got so far behind that I ended up piling on the math courses my 12th grade year in order to have enough to get into a decent college. English courses and history were never even a challenge for me, same with science but math was... As an adult who is now considered "Good" at math I think that schools and teachers are to blame for my being convinced otherwise for so much of my life. I was somehow convinced that you could either have an english/history brain or a math/science brain. Anyway, Lo seems to have the best of both worlds. She's super good at everything which makes me grateful for her dad in that regard... awesome geek genes!

Her school coincides book fairs with conferences and it's a good marketing ploy. This time the book fair was Buy one, Get one free and Lora had six dollars in her wallet. She chose two chapter books. CHAPTER books!?! I was talking about her at work today, saying that she'll be eight soon, and realized that having an eight year old makes ME old. I thought I was old when she turned six. I remembered saying "Six is a real kid... not like a LITTLE kid, a REAL kid." It's like every year is a milestone. Sometimes, every day. And every time a milestone hits me, I think to myself "I can't believe we've made it this far!" There are so many more milestones ahead of us and I don't think I'll ever stop being amazed at what an amazing child she is. I'm so super lucky to have gotten a kid who is so super rad.

Hey some of those genes came from you. How can someone skip most of their classes and still do well on the final after studying what one day. Your a great mom!
